Pocket Size

20 - 30 August 2025

ARDEN + WHITE GALLERY will present Pocket Size, a rare and intimate encounter with the work of Australian artist Greg Wood, opening August 20th.  Bringing together thirteen micro-paintings alongside five of his traditionally small works, this ten-day exhibition invites viewers into a miniature world—one that rewards patience, quiet looking, and the slowing of time.

In our age of sensory over-saturation, Wood’s paintings offer a welcome pause. His practice trades in the subtle nuances of landscape, where breaths and whispers of pigment unfold in intentionally subdued palettes. These works resist the twenty-first-century urge for immediacy, instead inviting close inspection and leaving space for the viewer’s own memory and experience to seep in. Guided as much by absence as by presence, his images carry an air of timelessness evoking the careworn romance of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries while maintaining a fresh, contemporary sensibility.

In Pocket Size, scale becomes an extension of Wood’s philosophy. The miniature dimensions of the works compel us to lean in, to inhabit that liminal space between what is shown and what is felt. As if lingering in the fleeting graduations of dusk, they offer moments of ambiguity and reflection in a world that often demands stark contrast. This is painting at its most distilled—small in stature, yet expansive in resonance.
