ARDEN + WHITE GALLERY is pleased to present Morning Light in Spring, Gwen Hardie’s most monumental work to date, presented as a solo installation at The Armory Show in New York, September 24–27.
Across twenty-four 24 × 24-inch oil paintings, Hardie constructs a continuous chromatic sequence extending 48 feet. Developed over six months in the artist’s studio, the installation moves gradually from green through yellow to orange, tracing the subtle evolution of color through light and duration.
Hardie is recognized for her rigorous investigation of color as it transforms under changing conditions of light. Through the meticulous layering of oil paint, she creates luminous surfaces defined by transitions that are both subtle and precise. Her paintings treat light not merely as illumination, but as an active and immaterial presence—one that continually reshapes our perception of color, surface, and space. Bringing together the central concerns of Hardie’s practice, Morning Light in Spring considers the physical dimensions of lived experience, the intangible yet palpable presence of light, and the passage of time.
