biography
Marcel Rozek (b. 1992), a native of Akron, Ohio, who now resides in Sacramento, California, creates his multilayered compositions by employing a staining technique popularized by the early abstractionists and artists of the Washington Color School. He follows in the footsteps of these greats of the art world, Morris Louis chief among them, while also going beyond the achievements of color field painters before him in terms of technique.
When he begins a painting, he pours a mixture of diluted paint onto an unprimed canvas, allowing the paint to create the organic forms and movement. With this technique, pools of color spread out and blend together before permeating the canvas. When colors mix, they absorb at different rates, resulting in new color palettes and dreamy, spectral shapes.
Rozek sees in his art a reflection of himself, with each piece conveying a different meaning to different people. Rozek's message is one that compels the viewer to reflect on their own vision of the world.
Rozek graduated from Ohio's Myers School of Art in 2017, earning a bachelor's degree in studio art, with a minor in drawing and painting. Since finishing his undergraduate degree, Rozek's artwork has been displayed in Istanbul, London, and Amsterdam.
